Lens Types

There are several types of lenses, with or without power, prescribed to solve different kind of eye disorder.

1Single Vision Lens

Single vision lenses are the most common prescribed optical lenses and this lens has only one focal power over the whole lens. Therefore, it can only be used to correct vision in a specific distance or conditions such as Myopia, Hypermetropia and Astigmatism.

Normally, most individuals who wear glasses before age of 40 will prescribe single vision lenses. If this group of people who aged 40 and above still uses single vision lenses, they might have vision difficulties when seeing object at near distance due to the condition of Presbyopia.

Eventually they may need 2 separate pair of single vision glasses to solve both distance vision.

2Bifocal Vision Lens

Bifocal lenses provide two distinct optical powers for far and near distance vision and this lenses are most commonly prescribed to people with presbyopia who also require a correction for myopia, hypermetropia or astigmatism. It has a straight or visible line to split those two optical powers. The top part is used to see far distance and the bottom part is used to see near distance.

A major benefit of a Bifocal is that it’s the easiest way to give a pair of spectacles with two focusing power. It offers a very wide field of clear peripheral vision for both parts.

However, a “Jump” image will be occurred when seeing an object vertically from the top to the bottom segment. This will caused difficulties especially walking down the staircase or some others sport activities like golfing. Secondly, Bifocal lenses can’t provide a clear vision when seeing an object within the distance range from 40cm to 100cm, due to its absence of intermediate vision power. Therefore, it’s not an ideal lens for people who spend long hours with the computer.

3Multifocal (Progressive) Vision Lens

Progressive lenses are also known as Varifocal lens which provide a smooth transition from distance to near vision, allowing the viewing of all intermediate distances. Progressive lenses are the optimum solution for presbyopia. These are designed to restore clear and accurate vision at all distances, without needing to constantly change glasses. The upper part of the lens makes it possible to see things far away, the central part to see the middle distance and the lower part to see close up.

The only disadvantage of this progressive lens is its narrow central distance vision which due to its peripheral aberrations. This might cause people to experience a sensation of “swim” when make quick head movements. But most peripheral vision problems caused by progressive lenses typically are mild and temporary, and disappear as we have adapted to the lenses.

However, over the last several years, progressive lens designs have been continually improved to reduce peripheral aberrations. Today, most first-time wearers are comfortable with progressive lenses almost immediately.

4Computer Lens

Computer lenses are special-purpose prescription lens to eliminate any vision related problem from prolonged computer use. The eye problems which caused by prolonged computer use has describes as Computer Vision Syndrome (CVS). Normally, this syndrome will cause symptoms like eyestrain, headache, blurred vision, dry eyes and neck or shoulder pain.

Computer lenses can be defined to 2 types, single vision glasses with a special Bluish Anti-Reflection coating and Occupational Progressive Lenses.

The simplest computer glasses are the single vision lenses with a modified lens power prescribed to relax the amount of accommodation required to keep objects in focus at the distance of the computer screen and provides the largest field of view. Besides that, a special Bluish Anti-Reflection coating with light yellow tinted will be applied to the lens surface, in order to block short-wavelength of the ”Blue Light” emitted from computer screens. With over exposure from “Blue Light” which source from the Sun, fluorescent or LED lighting and electronic screen, it will cause a serious damage to the retinal.

Occupational Progressive Lenses are also one of the best options to overcome CVS. Although similar to a traditional no-line invisible progressive multifocal lens in design, a variable focus lens is much more task specific. This lens has a small segment at the top part of the lens for viewing objects in the distance, a wide intermediate segment for viewing the computer monitor, and finally a small segment in the lower part of the lens for focusing on close objects. No visible lines or segments are in this type of lens, so it feels more like normal vision. And this lens also could be coated with Bluish Anti-Reflection coating as well to prevent any “Blue Light” entering our eye and caused retinal damage.

6 Polarized Lens

Polarized lens reduce the glare in our vision by eliminating the easily scattered and skewed horizontal component of light, and allow only the vertical component of light, which is preferred for clearer vision. Vertical aligned light is preferred because it respects the natural tendency of the visual system to focus on the vertical component of an image. Hence, polarized lens are good for sunglasses or outdoor eyewear to improve the vision by eliminating glare, especially driving, golfing and even fishing too.

7 Photochromic Lens (Self Tinting Lens)

Photochromic lens is known as sun reactor or variable tint lenses that darken on exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation. Once the UV is removed, such as walking indoor, the lens will return to its normal clear state. This lens can be made of glass, plastic or polycarbonate material.
